Kaika decided to go the long way home along the sandy beach so he could reflect on what had happened at the swap meet. His brilliant idea was not working out, so he did not know how he was going to raise the money for his trip. He was even considering calling up Coach Bill to ask for help.

As he walked along the beach, he approached an old man and his Poi dog. The dog was fetching a stick that the old man was throwing into the ocean. Kaika watched the dog for a minute and then the old man introduced himself.

The old man said, “Young man, my name is Og. Please tell me why you have such a sad face.”

Makaunecklace-BoyEntrepreneurKaika replied, “I had a great idea of selling my makau fishook necklaces at the swap meet, but I was told I could not sell my items there because I am not old enough and I didn’t have a business license.” I am not sure what to do now. I am concerned that I may not be able to raise the money needed so I can go with my baseball team to a tournament in California.”

Og said, “Don’t give up! There is always a way. Everything worthwhile in life takes time and requires perseverance and an unwavering belief in yourself.”

Kaika asked, “Well, then, what do you think I should do?”

Why we need obstacles…

Og replied, “Let me give you some advice that will help you earn lots of money in your life and, more importantly, will allow you to provide a better living for both you and your family for many years to come:

Obstacles are necessary for success because in selling, as in all careers of importance, victory only comes after many struggles and countless defeats!”

AdversityToOpportunity-PatrickSnowWith this newfound wisdom in his mind, Kaika thanked Og and continued to walk home. He now had a smile on his face and felt more eager than ever to sell his first makau the very next morning under the banyan tree. With this great advice, Kaika felt much better about things. When he got home, he grabbed his skimboard, and he and Leilani spent the rest of the day enjoying the surf at Sugar Beach.
